What exactly is a differential you ask? It is the part of your vehicle that transfers the power from the engine to your wheels and allows them to rotate at different speeds. For example, if you are making a turn, the drive wheels on the side in the direction you are turning don’t have to travel as far as the drive wheels on the other side.
The differential allows the outer drive wheel to rotate faster than the inner drive wheel during the turn. This is necessary when the vehicle turns, making the wheel that is traveling around the outside of the turning curve roll farther and faster than the other. An increase in the speed of one wheel is balanced by a decrease in the speed of the other.
The main symptom of a bad differential is noise. The differential may make noises, such as whining, howling, clunking and bearing noises. Vibration and oil leaking from the rear differential seal may also be signs of a failing differential. If you are experiencing any of these issues, please give us a call right away!
